The poncho is an essential Andean garment since pretty much forever! A traditional poncho is a spectacular piece of spinning, dyeing, and weaving, and being able to do all of those things to produce a poncho is the culmination of a lifetime of study, not even considering what can be months of spinning and weeks or months of weaving. We have an excellent selection of ponchos available right now by special permission. Several ponchos on offer here are particularly special and priced according to the complexity of techniques involved, such as discontinuous warp, beaded warp, and multiple-color supplementary warp pickup, and even the “standard” ponchos are exceptional quality of spinning, dyeing, and weaving.
These amazing textiles are woven by hand on backstrap looms in a variety of CTTC’s member associations, using from yarn that is spun by hand with drop spindles in the traditional Peruvian method stretching back thousands of years, and dyed by hand with natural dyes using sustainable practices and materials local to the Andes of the Cusco region.
