I don't think that a hat basket is quite so essential in the UK as it is in some colder climes, but I want one anyway. Better get knitting.

Mind you, I have a large bag of hats/scarves/etc already, but they are mine, not for lending

In our family it was most often an apple basket parked near the door or in the sunporch, full of woolly toques, scarves and thick, felty 'double-knit' (colourwork) mitts. In a Canadian winter you definitely appreciate layering up before heading outdoors

I've been skipping my hat lately--being all "sick of winter"--and now I think I'm getting sick.

I had forgotten that Elizabeth Zimmerman had mittens and hats in her last spring/early summer months of the Almanac. It makes complete sense.

Heh. I love hats, but I find all too often that I'm better served by a scarf that goes up to cover my nose and ears.

My favorite post so far (and I think the first time I've commented in the months that I've been reading) - you express the combo of mundane sick kid on a snowy day and rich family and personal history perfectly.

P.S. But of COURSE I don't go out in the winter with my head uncovered! My down coat has a toasty-warm hood. (I know, it's just not the same.)

Oddly, I've never knitted a hat. I suppose I should try it - I have some odds and ends of handspun that would be first rate as a hat, and I think there's enough for matching mittens.

I've thought about my comment and come to the conclusion it's rather sexist. His choice of a mate doesn't have much, if anything, to do with whether or not he has a basket of woolies! He can knit them himself! Sometimes I'm surprised at how easily I follow common threads of thoughts. Baaaa....
