Hey Abby, I really enjoyed this blog post (among many others I've been reading of yours today). I have to agree with you that I prefer a prep that is blended as much as your 5-pass batts here. I see folks who sell batts on etsy that look like your first or second pass, and I just don't get the popularlity of those batts. I mean, why bother carding at all, when they're virtually un-blended?

Anyway, I've bookmarked this post for future reference, for when I can get my hands on a drum carder. Thanks for the play-by-play. Gorgeous fiber, gorgeous yarn. Love me some tweeds. :-)

Abby I have tried to no avail to find out if anyone out there can tell me if you can dye wool without using all that plastic wrap and come out with the same results.
It is impossible for me to use that method because I dont want to put all that plastic into the enviornment. I am writing you because I thought you might have some suggestions.
Every book I have looked at uses huge amounts of plastic. I tried to find someone on the internet but all I could come up with was using it not not using it.
I wrote Deb Menz, no answer.
If you could help me out it would be greatly appreciated
Thanks and also thank you for your generosity in sharing your techniques

I'm probably going to buy what you call the Cardzilla ($2,024.!!). Though I am termpted to go non-motorized as this will be my first carder. Non-motroized it is $789. I have the whole weekend to decide! Brilliant blog entry, very informative.

I am so grateful you posted this -- and that I found it. I was just trying to figure out the best way to approach making a tweed. Thank you!

I'd just like to say thank you as well, even though this post is kinda old! It really helped me, when I played around with making my first tweed blend, which I'm totally proud of and which you should have a good portion of the honor in! So thank you!

Your yarn is beautiful and you might consider presenting it in unskeined form as its beauty is revealed more fully that way. Look at your photos. Thank you for the amazing drumcarding tutorial of course. You are a master and I've often thought that if you'd write a book then I'd surely buy it (Spindlers-wise).

I got a drum carder a few weeks ago, and now that I'm out of school, I finally have time to play on it - so the timing on finding your article was perfect! I found your post through the Yarn Harlot's blog.

Thanks for the tutorial - the yarn is lovely!
